Pig number one was
trying to sleep.
Plumping her pillows
and counting sheep.

But in comes pig number two—with buttered toast and a book, which she intends to read all night. It's not long until pig number three is also in bed, painting her trotters and sipping iced tea. Soon, a boar juggling plums, a pig with drums, one with a birthday cake, and one in a wedding dress show up.

By the time the tenth pig arrives, the room is filled with music, balls, dancers, a horse, and chaos galore. When pig number one begins to weep and asks them "in the sweetest way, if they would kindly . . . go away," the porkers leave, cleaning their mess as they go. Pig number one is finally able to close her eyes and sleep.

Goodnight, Sweet Pig is an appealing, rhyming counting book perfect for story time. Masse's artwork, done in jewel-tone acrylics, is full of action and energy.
