Elizabeth MacLeod and Louise Phillips have created a clever, lively rhyming game in the form of a board book. Each double-page scene offers the first three lines of a rhyme:
I heard a little baa;
It woke me from my sleep.
First I saw a woolly face . . .
When the reader turns the page, the final line—as well as an animal—is revealed:
And then I saw a sheep.
Bears growl, cats purr, and bees buzz their way through this appealing title.
The illustrations, outlined in what looks to be black crayon, are large, cheerful, and bursting with energy.
Classroom Experience: We took the book into a pre-school classroom. It didn’t take long for the students to begin shouting out their guesses to the rhymes. A perfect choice for read-alouds as well as building phonemic awareness.
