James Earl Carter, Jr. Birthday. Born October 1, 1924. Carter served as the 39th President of the United States (1977-1981). Discovery School offers a lesson plan appropriate for grades 6-8, "Carter as President and Ex-President." For a brief biography, go here.

Prime Meridian Conference. Anniversary. The Prime Meridian is an imaginary longitude line running through the Royal Greenwich Observatory in Greenwich, England. The Prime Meridian is the meridian at which longitude is 0 degrees. It separates the eastern and western hemispheres. On October 1, 1884, delegates from around the world met in Washington to determine the position of the meridian. You may read more about the conference here.

Mahatma Gandhi. Anniversary of Birth. Born October 2, 1869; Died January 30, 1948. Gandhi was a major political and spiritual leader of India. There is a plethora of information available on the Internet about Gandhi. A good place to start is here.

Thurgood Marshall Sworn In. On this day in 1967, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first black U.S. Supreme Court Justice. For more information, go here.

Sputnik Launched. On this day in 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite. For more information, go here.

The Great Chicago Fire. Anniversary. On this day in 1871, legend has it that a cow kicked over a lantern in the barn of a Mrs. O'Leary. Regardless of how it started, the fire spread quickly, eventually leveling four square miles and killing approximately 250 people before it died.
