Daniel Boone. Anniversary of Birth.
Born November 2, 1734; Died September 26, 1820. Boone was a famous United States pioneer and frontiersman. For more information, go here.



Warren G. Harding. Anniversary of Birth.
Born November 2, 1865; Died August 2, 1923, while in office. Harding was the 29th President of the United States (1921-1923). For a brief biography, go here.

North Dakota Admitted to Union. On this day in 1889, North Dakota was admitted to the Union as the 40th state. For more information, go here.

James K. Polk. Anniversary of Birth. Born November 2, 1795; Died June 15, 1849. Polk was the 11th President of the United States (1845-1849). His term is remembered for the negotiated establishment of the Oregon Territory and the acquisition (through the Mexican-American War) of 1.2 million square miles of land. He also oversaw the opening of the U.S. Naval Academy, the Washington Monument, and the issuance of the first postage stamps in the United States. For a brief biography, go here.

National Sandwich Day. Celebrated on the anniversary of the birth of John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. The Earl is credited with creating the first sandwich. Supposedly, the Earl, while gambling, refused to leave the table during an all-night card game. Hungry, he told his servants to bring him some meat placed between two slices of bread so he could eat with one hand and continue to play with the other.

King Tutankhamen's Tomb Discovered. Anniversary.

Marie Curie. Anniversary of Birth. Born on this day in 1867, Curie was a Polish chemist and physicist. She was awarded, along with her husband, Pierre Curie, the Nobel Prize in physics for discovering radium. For more information, go here.

Hernán Cortés Conquered Mexico. Anniversary. On this day in 1519, Cortés and his troops took the Aztec leader Montezuma hostage, conquering Mexico for Spain.

Berlin Wall Opened. Anniversary. On this day in 1989, the Berlin Wall which separated West Germany and East Germany was opened, allowing citizens from both west and east to cross freely through checkpoints.

Kristallnacht. Anniversary. On the evening of November 9, 1939, and into the next day, Adolf Hitler's supporters burned and destroyed Jewish businesses, sacred texts, and artwork across Germany.

Robert Louis Stevenson. Anniversary of Birth.
Born November 13, 1850; Died December 3, 1894. Stevenson was a Scottish author who wrote the Child's Garden of Verses and Treasure Island, among others. Go here for more information.

Nellie Bly Begins Trip Around the World. Anniversary. On this day in 1889, newspaper reporter Nellie Bly set off from New York in an attempt to beat the fictional character Phileas Fogg's record to voyaging "around the world in 80 days." Bly made the trip in 72 days.

Astrid Lindgren. Anniversary of Birth. Born November 11, 1907; Died January 28, 2002. Swedish author and playwright. Wrote the Pippi Longstocking series.

Claude Monet. Anniversary of Birth. Born November 14, 1840; Died December 5, 1926. Monet was the founder of French impressionist painting. For more information, go here.

William Steig. Anniversary of Birth. Born November 14, 1907; Died October 3, 2003. Steig was a children's book author and illustrator. He won the Caldecott award for Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. Visit the author's website.

Gettysburg Address. Anniversary. On this day in 1863, United States President Abraham Lincoln gave the two-minute address standing on the Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg, PA. Universal Children's Day. By resolution of the United Nations General Assembly. November 20th marks the day on which the Declaration of the Rights of the Child (1959) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) were adopted.

Elizabeth George Speare. Anniversary of Birth. Born November 21, 1908; Died  November 15, 1994. Children's book author. Speare won the 1959 Newbery Medal for The Witch of Blackbird Pond as well as the 1962 Newbery Medal for The Bronze Bow.

John F. Kennedy Assassinated. Anniversary. On this day in 1963 in Dallas, Texas, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed by a sniper. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the murder. Oswald was later shot and killed by Jack Ruby while in police custody.

Slinky® Toy Debut. Anniversary. Created in 1943 by Richard James, a naval engineer. James was conducting an experiment with tension springs. During the experiment, one of the springs fell to the floor and began to "walk." The toy was first introduced at Gimbel's Department Store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1945. Teachers have found the slinky to be a valuable aid when teaching certain scientific concepts. A lesson plan on earthquakes which incorporates a Slinky® may be found here.
