CHOICES Character Education

by Kathy B. from Iowa

Procedure:Write CHOICES on the board.  When the class is having trouble attending, erase a letter.  The next day write the missing letters back up, but in a different color.  (It helps when they realize that they can make it through a day without losing too many letters.)  If by the last half hour of the day CHOICES is still on the board, then "Choice Time" is awarded.

Daily keep a running total by multiplying each letter of CHOICES still on the board by ten.  Establish a class goal. (You may want to start at 100.) When the class has earned 100 points, then an extra 5 minutes is added to the last Recess.  As the year continues, raise the goal and change the reward.  At the end of the year, your class goal might be 500 and the reward could be a pizza party.

On days when CHOICES seems to need a boost, the following CHOICES Character Education Book List might come in handy.  You may use my definitions, or let your class develop their own.  After you start reading books, then your class will help you identify more to add to your list.  Books of poems by Shel Silverstein are a must, as they contain poems that fit under several values.
